About Hauppauge Community Action
The Hauppauge Community Action Committee (HCAC) was formed to ensure that residents have a clear, organized, and constructive voice in local planning decisions that impact public safety, environmental health, and community well-being.
The Hauppauge Community Action Committee is a community-led group formed to bring together Hauppauge residents, parents, first responders, and local stakeholders to share verified information, coordinate outreach, and engage in productive dialogue around local development, safety, and planning issues.
Our mission is to advocate for responsible, transparent decision-making that prioritizes public safety, environmental protection, and the overall well-being of the Hauppauge community. Through education, collaboration, and constructive action, we work to ensure residents are informed, heard, and empowered to participate in decisions that impact their lives.
Our Mission
Our Vision
We envision a Hauppauge where:
Local development decisions are made with full transparency
Public safety and environmental protection are non-negotiable priorities
Residents are meaningfully informed and engaged
Collaboration between officials, first responders, experts, and the public is standard practice
Our goal is long-term civic engagement — not reactionary advocacy.
Background & Formation
HCAC was formed in response to a proposed utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project located in close proximity to residential neighborhoods, schools, and critical infrastructure in Hauppauge.
While recognizing the importance of advancing clean energy and grid reliability, community members raised concerns regarding:
Lithium-ion battery fire risks and thermal runaway events
Emergency response readiness and first responder safety
Potential environmental impacts, including groundwater and air quality
Siting decisions near densely populated areas
HCAC was created to provide structure, verified information, and coordinated civic engagement around these issues.
