About Hauppauge Community Action
The Hauppauge Community Action Committee is a community-led group formed to bring together Hauppauge residents, parents, first responders, and local stakeholders to share verified information, coordinate outreach, and engage in productive dialogue around local development, safety, and planning issues.
Our mission is to advocate for responsible, transparent decision-making that prioritizes public safety, environmental protection, and the overall well-being of the Hauppauge community. Through education, collaboration, and constructive action, we work to ensure residents are informed, heard, and empowered to participate in decisions that impact their lives.
Our Mission
Current Focus: Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Proposal
Public Safety
Working with local agencies to promote safer neighborhoods and emergency preparedness.
Transparency
Providing clear, accessible information on development proposals and public records.
The committee was formed in response to a proposed utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project located in close proximity to residential neighborhoods, schools, and critical community infrastructure in Hauppauge.
While clean energy advancement is important, lithium-ion battery storage facilities carry documented risks, including thermal runaway events, fires that are difficult to extinguish, toxic smoke release, and potential long-term environmental impacts. Current emergency response protocols for certain battery incidents may rely on a containment approach rather than immediate extinguishment, raising questions about evacuation planning and first responder readiness.
The committee is focused on:
Community Engagement
Ensuring residents are informed, heard, and empowered to participate in decisions that affect Hauppauge’s future. Providing clear pathways for public input, meetings, and updates.
Environmental Responsibility
Evaluating potential environmental impacts, including air quality, groundwater protection, and long-term site safety considerations.
Working with residents, local officials, first responders, and subject-matter experts to ensure informed and constructive dialogue.
